The Jawbone Era
AT JAWBONE I WAS THE PRODUCT DESIGNER FOR THE ERA HEADSET AS WELL AS THE "SMART CASE" THAT CHARGED IT AND KEPT IT IN EASY REACH.
Bluetooth headsets had lost much of their prestige over the years and we were eager to address some of the issues as we saw them. We saw our main competition as white earbuds and holding your phone up to your ear rather than the plethora of cheap headsets flooding the market.
While we were trying to get the size and weight of the Era down we also knew from research that users hated having to remember to charge it and then to bring it with them. So a key piece of the product was a companion case that not only housed the diminutive headset but also reduced the anxiety around keeping the Era topped off.
In an effort to further ease battery fears, the charging case was designed to feel and behave much like a zippo lighter. It opens to a satisfying "shin-k" and click that “ignited” the charge status LEDs that are revealed though otherwise invisible laser etched holes. The effect is that of flicking open the device reveals a reassuring flame indicating how much charge is left not only in the headset but in the reserve battery as well. Closing it extinguishes the charge status.
